BEETLE DRIVE
Club members had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with a beetle drive in the clubhouse. The event was excellently organised by Rowan and Barry Miltenburg and everyone had great fun with what turned out to be a surprisingly fast paced game. The two winners on the day were Keith Baker and Allan Wright but the real winners were everyone who attended - there was certainly lots of laughter all afternoon.
A huge thanks to Rowan and Barry for this event.
Thanks to Jane and Pat for keeping us refreshed.
Next up will be a cribbage and dominoes afternoon on Tuesday 26th March

WINTER INDOOR BOWLS
The club (with many thanks to Shayne) are running weekly sessions of short mat bowling. Pairs are 'seeded' and randomly drawn to try and achieve teams of equal experience. Results count towards a Super League so the more you play - the better it is.
Southport Dunes Short Mat Bowls:
Monday night 5:15 to 7:30
Practice 5:15 to 6pm.
Game 6pm to 7:15pm.
Pairs drawn each week.

CLUB COMPETITION CHANGES
As previously stated a club objective this year is to get more members playing more bowls. To try and achieve this the committee have made a few changes to the club competitions with the aim of attracting lesser experienced bowlers into entering:
A new Junior (Under 30) Singles competition
The Tuesday evening pairs league will change to a 'turn up on the evening' event so you can play as often as you wish. Players on the evening will be seeded and then randomly drawn to try and create pairs of even experience. Scores will be accumulated throughout the season
3 Wood Pairs competition is to be extended to include Juniors so each pairing must be Gentleman & Lady / Junior
The handicap system is being 'widened'
The Birkdale SIngles Championship is to become a handicap competition
More details will be available as the season starts but please consider entering more competitions this year as many of these are now designed to appeal to lesser experienced bowlers

SHAYNE RIMMER - SHORTLISTED FOR COACH OF THE YEAR
Congratulations to our club member Shayne Rimmer for being included in the Bowls England Coach of the Year Shortlist!
Well deserved recognition for his work with the inaugural Bowls Lancashire academy and Amy Rose side, alongside his work with Southport Bowling Club - Flat Green and the White Rose county team.
Taking on the role of Lancashire County Junior Manager in 2021, Shayne has embarked on making vast improvements in the region.
His dedication is exemplified by the completion of his Coach Bowls Level One and the ongoing pursuit of his Level Two certification. Under Shayne’s guidance, Lancashire achieved a historic White Rose Semi-Final position in 2022, a testament to his leadership.
Shayne’s approach led to the formation of Bowls Lancashire’s inaugural Junior Academy in 2022, attracting over 15 juniors in its first session. Additionally, he initiated Southport BC’s first weekly Junior coaching sessions, expanding to indoor short mat during the winter. The outreach to primary schools and scout groups during these sessions resulted in junior recruitment increasing five times.
In the summer of 2023, Southport’s junior membership grew to nearly 20% of total playing members. Shayne capitalized on this momentum by entering Bowls Lancashire’s first-ever Amy Rose team, blending experienced players with promising youngsters, fostering a competitive spirit to ensure their continued participation.
Shayne’s influence extends beyond team achievements, as juniors recruited under his stewardship represented the county in B team matches. This remarkable work helped to see the rise of three new England Men’s Junior Internationals and an additional Women’s U18 trialist.
Beyond his role as Junior Manager, Shayne’s personal career, which commenced in the early 1990s, reflects his passion for the sport. Winning six county titles and two national titles, he has combined his own achievements with a commitment to nurturing the next generation. Shayne’s sacrifices, including a shift in focus from personal success, to play with more inexperienced junior players in county and national competitions, underscore his belief in the vital role of the youth in securing the future of bowls in Lancashire.

Southport Bowling Club offers:-
- Free coaching by qualified instructors
- The loan of equipment, avoiding the need to incur any expense until you are sure the game is for you
Southport Bowling Club is the only Flat Green Bowling Club in the Southport and Liverpool area. Established in 1937 our two bowling greens are located at the south end of the Marine Lake in Kings Gardens just off the Promenade. There is a large clubroom with adjacent changing and locker facilities.
We have a reputation for being a very friendly sociable club and new members are made very welcome. For the new bowler we offer free taster sessions and free coaching plus the loan of suitably sized bowls. The only proviso, you must wear footwear with smooth soles and no heels.
Our playing season begins in April and runs through the summer months to the middle of September. Club roll ups are held on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. These games are a relaxed and easy way to learn, improve and play bowls.
Social Bowling may also take place at weekends and in the week when the greens are available and not in use for organised competitions.
For those players wishing to play in a more competitive arena the club enters teams, and individual players enter both National and County competitions. Various Club Leagues run on weekdays for members to enjoy a competitive game in addition to Club Competitions. A number of social events take place throughout the year, Bowl and Dine, Quiz nights, and Bingo. Special themed events take place throughout the summer and also the winter months
We open our second Green to members of the public, with a Green Fee payable.
